"A Bit of Greece"
Many visitors at Fairmount are quite surprised to see an enormous bit of ancient
architecture at the end of the main road. At the height of the depression in the 1920's,
the owners of Fairmount decided, against the wave of financial penny pinching, to construct a giant mausoleum in the style of classical
Greek monuments. It lends a very striking, if not surreal atmosphere to the grounds.
An interesting personal note: As a teen, I once made a rather hallucinogenic visit to
Fairmount at sunrise one morning. While frankly tiptoeing between a heavenly chemical inspired experience and mortal reality, I came upon this scene, with the early sun, golden trees, and a pink sky beaming above. I believed I had stumbled upon the Temple of Heaven--- !
