I am a boni-fide TWEAKER. I love fixing, customizing, and fine tuning any instrument I have- and guitars are prime candidates. Some of the guitars I've worked on and still have are shown below.
The same paint and technique I recommend for bikes and cars can also be used on fine instruments. Urethane paint may be used on electric and laminated musical instruments of wood, metal, or plastic (or anything else for that matter) to great success and durability, and fine finish.

I have been refinishing guitars for twenty years, and fine acoustic instruments (such as my Martin or Gibson acoustics) require lacquer or varnish finish for acoustic reasons. The finish on electric or laminated (plywood or composite) instruments will not affect the tone as far as I have been able to discern no matter how hard I try.
Urethane applies very well, is extremely durable, can be repaired if needed. (The green Ibanez is a factory urethane finish.)
